Tips for the First Week of your Farm Share CSA box

Posted on May 27th, 2019 by Reuben DeMaster

Your box is a great example of a perfect spring growing season.  The temperatures, rain, and sun were close to ideal in the last couple weeks.  When it is too cool or rainy, the veggies don't get big enough. When we have a hot spell, then the greens get over mature and do what we call "bolting."

But this week is perfect. I hope it lasts.  If we don't get very many hot days then the hundreds of lettuce heads we have planted will last for a couple more pickings.  We are making plenty of lettuce available to you so, double up on it or even purchase extras! Make a salad every day.

Your first box is light but as the season continues it will get more full and heavier as more crops are ready.

Lettuce Storage Tip of the week:
At the very least you should remove the lettuce from the bag it came in, pat dry with a paper towel to wick away moisture, and put in a dry plastic bag and put in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator.  I'll be sharing more storage instructions for lettuce soon.

The chives include the blossoms, which are also edible and flavorful.  Use them to decorate your salads or pizzas.

Please take the post card out of your box and give it to a friend. I hope to reward many of you with a $25 credit on your account when one of your friends join.

Have a great week!

Reuben and Tessa DeMaster

P.S. Don't rip your box, please.  Save it to return with your next delivery.
