Beans & Celery like the rain. Tomatoes don't! + Pork Rib SALE!

Posted on September 3rd, 2021 by Tessa DeMaster

Farm News: Beans and celery seem to have benefited from the 5 inches of rain from Hurricane Ida but the tomatoes definitely didn't like it! Our farm members are super understanding and supportive when I have to send an explanation about their shares last week when we were suddenly short of tomatoes. This week's heirloom tomatoes are from our farmer friend, Leroy. (continue below...)

Harvesting:  Celery,  Winter Squash: Delicatas & Spaghetti Squash, Green Beans, Okra, Yellow Onions, Colored Peppers, mixed hot peppers, Basil, Garlic, Red Potatoes.  ***Sometimes we have limited amounts of the first harvests. If you love something above and didn't get any this time, change your preferences to mark that veggie as a "5" and others as something lower. NEW:farm grown Celery is smaller than what you are used to in the grocery store but full of flavor.  Spaghetti Squash should be cut short ways through the middle to keep the long noodle like strands long. Delicata Squash is great for roasting and stuffing. Some recipes even allow you to eat the tender peel.

Farm News continued: You've been enjoying the abundance of summer with heavy, full shares. No one truly knows how a farming season will go, so your confidence in us in committing to a whole season is unique and appreciated. Last week was the PEAK of tomato season and we expected to ride out the reminder of the tomato harvest with a good amount of tomatoes this week as well. The heavy rains cause tomatoes to split open and to deteriorate, resulting in many tomatoes in the field that are not useable. It sad to see the tomato season end so suddenly but early September is the time the field tomatoes die out. Some years we are able to keep them going in covered greenhouse/hoop houses longer but we haven't had time to get our new ones built since the blizzard destroyed ours last winter.

Good news is in the celery bed though! You might not expect celery to be difficult to grow but it presents unique challenges in our experience. Planting in just the right spot is key. Change is coming as the hot summer fades and our fall plantings are looking good. Here's a video you might enjoy: No celery for year and now this
