Fall Heat turn to Fall Frost

Posted on October 7th, 2019 by Reuben DeMaster

Do you remember the change in temperature at the end of last week?

We were in the 80s one day and the high the next day was 30 degrees lower. That’s a quick transition in a season.

Friday also sent us the earliest frost we remember, certainly in the last 11 years of CSA farming. Our normal early frost for this area is around October 15.

The frost didn’t kill all our plants but it did give some of our plants “frost-bite.”

One example is the bok choi we harvested on Monday, There is a little bit of brown edging on the interior leaves of the bok choi. This is a result of the frost. You will be cutting up your bok choi to use it, so just trim the brown edges from those leaves. The rest of the leaves and stems are fresh and delicious.

Another example is the green beans.  The beans have discolored spots where the light frost affected the appearance of the bean but nothing else is affected.  Enjoy them mixed with other veggies in a soup or stir fry.
