Resilience and perspective through the life of a tomato

Posted on October 24th, 2020 by Lilly Emendy

We discover on a daily basis how farming with our community is about so much more than growing vegetables. This week’s metaphorical inspiration came from the tomato plant pictured below. The lacinato kale was planted into a bed that held 50 cherry tomato plants earlier this year. Those plants were pulled up, the soil was amended, the surface tilled, landscape fabric pinned down, and still in October... a tomato seed germinates and grows super healthy! Talk about resilience!

We’re also overdue for our first Fall frost. In our USDA zone, 7b, October 15th is our average first frost. Looking ahead at the weather is seems we’re still a few weeks out from temps cold enough to take out our peppers and remaining sensitive summer crops. It’s an ominous feeling, yes there is fluctuation year to year, but the frequency of uncommon weather events points our worries more towards the reality of farming through a changing climate. But with anything uncertain and worrying in our lives, it’s about perspective. Right now, we’re focused on celebrating a twelfth week of harvesting off of our sweet pepper plants!

Eat well and enjoy each other this weekend,
