Farm Happenings for June 4, 2020

Posted on May 29th, 2020 by Lilly Emendy

The rains haven't been easy on all of our crops but our Summer favorites are growing like crazy! I think if I had sat in the cucumber beds for an hour I would have been able to watch them grow! Check out this adorable baby cucumber!

We worked hard this year to plant cucumber varieties that mean good eating and good pickling- this is from our first succession and is a variety called "Straight Eight". Later in the summer we will have "Tendergreen Burpless" and "Homemade Pickles".

If there are ever specific varieties of plants you'd like to see in your shares, reach out! We haven't set our Fall plantings in stone just yet, so there's still time if you have any requests for Fall vegetables like lettuce, kohlrabi, kale, and winter squash!

Some beautiful pottery is available from McCabe Coolidge, local community potter and regular Urban Teaching Farm volunteer! A third of each sale is being donated to the farm and he's dubbed the series "Together at Home". Each bowl is $15 and varies in shape, size and color a bit, but are all in a similar family. To Purchase, email Karen at karenday3@swva.net for payment instructions. Thanks to those of you who have already brought some home!

Don't forget you have the option to customize your share! Hoping to do some bread baking and just want a box full of herbs? You can do that! Looking to eat salads everyday? Swap or add extras! If you have any questions, reach out, I love talking about veggies!

Bon appetit,

Lilly, Zak, Nallah, and Ano
