Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer Season, Week 18, Delivery September 27th thru September 29th

---- Frost and Shortage ----

This Tuesday night they are predicting a definite frost in our area. What does this mean for us? Well, it means that a lot of our summer veggies will be gone after this week, they were already on a downturn so not too big of a deal. What this means is over the weekend we had to do a lot of scrabble picking, picking to try and get everything that would get effected inside. Did a lot of winter squash picking and now it's on to beans, corn, and peppers. Unfortunately, what this means is that veggies that are resistant to frost didn't get much attention: carrots, radishes, beets, kale, swiss chard, and leeks. These vegetables will survive the frost no problem, so they are not a priority. Thus, this week we will be short in some of these areas. Don't worry once the frost hits we will transition to true fall crops and carrots, beets, and the likes will return for next week.

---- Winter Squash ----

Started winter squash harvest over the weekend. Pull a lot of the field so far with still a bit more to come. We have acorn, butternut, festival, pie pumpkin, and spaghetti squash all available. Should have plenty on hand to finish out the season. Remember they are best kept in dry storage in a cool environment. I always like tucking my squash away in a kitchen cabinet for storage.
