Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer Season, Week 17, Delivery September 20th thru September 22nd

---- Cusp of Fall ----

Well this week is the last week of summer. Temperature are reported to start dipping into lows around the 40's and highs in the 60's. This means that some of our summer veggies will be leaving us, and some fall veggies will be joining us. Tomatoes will be the hardest hit. Late blight has already wiped out the romas and the slicers and cherries won't be too far behind. Melons and peppers hang on until first frost but will have slowed growth, so less production. On a happier note, we will start winter squash harvest here this weekend so look for all types of squash to be available in the upcoming weeks. Also carrots, beets, radishes, and turnips will be coming out of the field now, so should have plenty coming up here. Either way fall is looking quite normal so as long as the frost holds off we should have a good end to the season.

---- Summer Squash and Cucumbers

In my opinion this year for summer squash and cucumbers has been quite average with nothing to write home about. That said each planting produced to their fullest and we have tried to make sure you folks get your fill, however we are nearing the end. Our last two plantings of summer squash and cucumbers are only zucchini and slicer cukes. These two seem to do the best in cooler fall temps and remain productive. The slicer planting is a bit farther behind because as I mentioned in the previous paragraph a wet August slowed them down immensely. Look for zucchini this week and then hopefully slicer cukes next week, all the way until first frost.

---- Italian Peppers ----

This year, and previous years, we wanted to expand our pepper production so that everyone got their fill. This year we focused more on colored, red and yellow, italian sweet cone peppers. I fried up our two types with some sweet onions for taco veggies and man did that taste pretty good. Italian peppers after frying have a slight sweetness and hold their pepper taste even after being fried. Give them a go because it looks like they tend to all come at once, about a 2 to 3 week window.
