Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer Season, Week 10, Delivery August 2nd thru August 4th

---- Tomatoes ----

A quick update on tomatoes. The cherry tomatoes are starting to come in and the rest will soon follow. The tomato plants this year look very happy and are weed free, which means very low competition for nutrients. The slicers and roma have not started to turn red yet but there are a lot of green tomatoes ripening on the vine. Should see the first of them in about 2 weeks, fingers crossed.

---- Chickens ----

Recently cleaned out the barn this last week. With all the new hens in there it gets dirty alot quicker than usual, so it's important to stay ahead of the filth. Also, the new hens are starting to begin laying full time. Egg production has been up and should continue to rise for the time being. We always walk a tight rope with laying hens and eggs, always a situation of having either too much or too little.

---- Onions and Garlic ----

This week we'll begin harvesting sweet onions and garlic. As summer progresses the garlic and onions finish their bulbing phase in the field, and then we pick them and move them under cover to help them complete their drying phase. Onions and garlic need to dry so that they can be properly stored and hold for longer periods. Even though we are harvesting right now, they won't hit the pick list until late August.

Thanks,
Ian
