Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer Season, Week 7, Delivery July 12th thru July 14th

---- Summer Squash ----

We started harvesting summer squash and cucumbers last week. It was slow going until this weekend. Summer squash are really starting to take off. Normally we do staggered planting, so we are always picking a new planting every 4 weeks or so. This year because of the late spring and dry weather, our first two plantings decided to become one big planting. We will try to have enough summer squash for all you folks who want it, but don't worry it will be here until first frost in late September. Also, just a tid bit about our three varieties. Zucchini and yellow squash cook up relatively similar and soften very quickly when cooked. Patty pans however stay firm when cooked and hold up more like a potato when sauteed.

---- Slow Growth ----

Alot of our plants are still feeling the effects of the mini-June drought we had. As you can imagine when plants don't get enough water they put a lot more energy into developing roots instead of leaf/vegetable/fruit growth, so they absorb as much water as possible. That being said though, because they developed their roots so much when rain came they started growing quick. Everything at the farm is about 2 to 3 weeks behind schedule but looks very happy and is on the cusp of producing. Let's hope rain continues and we start filling our cooler with all these fresh fruits and veggies.

Thanks,
Ian
