Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer Season, Week 6, Delivery July 5th thru July 7th

---- Accommodating July 4th ----

July 4th week is a challenge as the holiday moves around and affects picking and delivery plans. Five years ago, we thought "why not declare a week off" and skip deliveries. Members often skip their deliveries that week, going on vacation. Why not us too! Give the farm crew a week off! Bad idea. That year, a whole field of broccoli needed picking and could not wait. Ian and I picked it all, and then had to store it in the cooler for a week. It held, but it did not look as good as when it was fresh picked! After that, we decided to just figure it out each year. This year, with the 4th on Monday, a key picking day, we just did extra picking on Thursday, giving everyone a 4 day weekend. Ian and Angie had a mini-vacation at our cabin, and Kathy and I held down the fort, picking a few things and taking care of chickens. Happy 4th of July!

---- Timely Rain ----

In June, we managed just one half inch rain the whole month. Any other rains were little showers measured in hundredths. So we have done a lot of watering to keep everything happy. Finally some respite. Saturday night we got a "lucky shower", little storm, pops up 20 miles away, goes right over us, giving us 2 tenths, then fades away as it moves on. And today, more organized showers that benefitted everyone in central Minnesota. A half inch. Everything is looking happy. A good start for July!

Thanks,
Phil
