Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer, Week 18, September 28 thru September 30

---- It's Fall ----

Well I'm sure you folks may have noticed but it's starting to look like fall out there. For us that means less summer veggies (Tomatoes, Beans, Peppers) and more fall veggies (Squash, Lettuce, Cabbagites). We will have to see what happens but if temps stay at a daytime high in the 70's it's perfect growing weather for a lot of fall crops.

---- Tomatoes ----

Well our first planting of tomatoes is all but done. There are a few romas left but slicers and cherries are completely picked dry. We do have a second planting that could produce something, but that's only if the frost holds off until mid October, they were stressed at a young age from the drought earlier in the year.

---- Winter Squash ----

Well with all the problems with watering and heat I would have never expected winter squash to be so plentiful this year. We have Festival, Butternut, Acorn, and Spaghetti currently. Buttercup and pie pumpkins are on there way. The butternuts are quite big so get ready to turn those into pies or soup, you can use butternut squash for pumpkin pie there's really no difference. The festivals are once again the sweetest and after roasting require no brown sugar to make them sweeter. Last night we had some stuffed acorn squash with spicy Italian sausage, rice, and fresh honey crisp apples and man that was fantastic, it's just like a twice baked potato. The squash should be here for quite sometime and they store fantastically on your kitchen counter so don't feel to stressed about using it right away.

Thanks,
Ian.
