Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer, Week 3, June 13

Posted on June 14th, 2021 by Phil Hannay

---- Last of the Asparagus ----

This week will be the last of the asparagus. We usually pick asparagus from mid May to mid June and then we let it grow out for the rest of the year. This allows the plant to expand it's root network and store nutrients that it will need for next spring.

---- Hot and Dry ----

Well last Friday it looked like we were finally going to get some rain but unfortunately it petered out and split in two and missed us. With the combination of dry and hot weather it makes many of our spring crops heat stressed and want to bolt, go to seed, too soon. That being said though our summer/main season crops are doing exceptionally well, we'll experience a bit of a production dip but it should transition in time.

---- Transplanting Fools ----

Even with the dry weather we are in full transplant season; winter squash, summer squash, cucumbers, broccoli, tomatoes, melons, and peppers, have all been planting these last two weeks. We are keeping them going by watering them every two days, and as I said before because of the hot weather they are loving it.

Ian.
