Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer, Week 4, June 22

---- Herbs are Starting Up ----

Herbs are here in a big way. This week we started harvesting basil, dill, and cilantro, with more varieties to come. Once again with the hot weather they grew very quick all we had to do was just give them some extra water.

---- First of the Summer Squash ----

Even though its the fourth week of CSA we already have summer squash, a true staple of summer vegetables. The three varieties we have are; zucchini, yellow squash, and patty pan. Zucchini and yellow squash are very similar and cook up soft, personally I prefer to spiralize them and make zoodles. Patty pans cook up firm and stay more solid like a diced potato, I love to pan fry them with salt, pepper, and a bit of old bay.

---- Zero Landfill ----

We had a question from one of our CSA members last week about why we still use plastic bags. Well truth be told we are currently moving towards compostable bags so they can go directly in our compost heap. But until then we still do use plastic bags and some plastic containers. But those plastics, and all of our packaging, do not go into a landfill. We will reuse, recycle or compost any packaging that you get in your box. That includes produce bags, zip lock bags, green strawberry pint, green tomato quarts, cherry tomato clamshells and egg cartons. Just put them inside your old box on delivery day and we'll pick them up.
