Trumpeter Swan Farm CSA News - Summer, Week 16, Sept 13

---- Tween Hens Go Outside ----

We got a batch of 100 chicks in June. They are now "tweens" (between a chick and a hen), and are ready to go outside. Today was their first day out. We keep them separated from the older hens, who sometimes take "pecking order" too seriously. Over the next two weeks we will slowly integrate the two groups, and they will become one flock.

---- Escaping Frost ----

Frost came as close as St Cloud last week. Fortunately, the day before rain and the early morning fog helped hold it at bay. This nice warm sunny week will keep things growing nicely. Amounts are now less than the peak harvest during the last few weeks. But the variety is still here.

---- Fall Beans ----

The green and yellow (wax) beans grow more slowly in fall. This actually makes the beans more tender, as long as they have good moisture - which is the case this year. I always look forward to beans in the fall - they just taste better!
