Farm Happenings for Week of July 4th

Posted on June 29th, 2022 by Lorraine Blackwell

I'm sending this out a day early to take advantage of the rainy weather to do my office tasks and to give you more time to order over the long weekend. Another important note: since there is lots of produce coming on strong now, I will be doing deliveries for the next three weeks in a row! Yeah, more veggies for you!

Snap pea season is fleeting, so be sure to grab some this week and next before they are gone. We also have the first of the zucchini, baby fennel, napa cabbage, and even some cherry tomatoes! There won't be enough cherry tomatoes for everyone that wants some... but don't worry, in another few weeks the plants will be big enough to have plenty to go around. For garlic scape lovers, I have offered two sizes: bunches (of 10 scapes) or a grocery bag packed full of scapes. Make sure you choose the right amount!

Rob grows some personal figs in giant containers in our greenhouse and has propogated some trees available for purchase for anyone interested in trying their hand at growing a fig tree. In our climate, these are best grown in large containers that are moved into a shed or garage during the winter months (although some people with very sheltered and sunny backyards have had success growing them in the ground in Guelph).

For those wondering when they might see veggies like carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, and onions, you can expect all of these over the next few weeks. The cucumbers will be first, with all the others following by the end of July at the latest. And then the carrots, potatoes, and onions stick around until the end of the season in December. We also have broccoli, cauliflower, more beets, green beans, slicing tomatoes, and much more to look forward to shortly.

Have a wonderful long weekend.
