Farm Happenings for Week of July 11th

Posted on July 7th, 2022 by Lorraine Blackwell

Back for week 2 of 3 in a row because it's the season where new veggies are becoming available all the time! If you like broccoli, this is the week to grab some because it's only around once in the summer and then not again until the fall. We also have a limited quantity of greenhouse cucumbers with more coming in future weeks!

We also have some exciting new products from Henry's Tempeh (a local Kitchener company) for those that enjoy alternatives to meat in their meals! I've enjoyed Henry's Tempeh for years and hope you will too. Additionally, we now carry Green Table's Organic Kimchi for another local fermented treat.

We will be back again the week of July 18th with more veggies and then the last week of July will be an off week.

In the photo above, Rob is carrying one of our many bee swarms we have had throughout June. If you follow our farm on social media you may have seen this capture in action. Bees swarm whenever a hive gets too full of bees and the queen decides the leave with some of the bees. She looks for a new spot to live while the bees left behind in the old hive immediately start raising a new queen. The benefit of swarms for beekeepers is that you can increase your number of hives at no cost. The downfall is that you need to be home and able to capture the swarm and convince them to stay where you place them! The swarm you see in the picture settled in a walnut tree not far from the hives. We cut the limb they settled on off the tree and Rob carried to a new beehive. This particular swarm was uncooperative and left (and Rob recaptured) several times. We have had good luck with other swarms this year and have doubled our active hives. While Rob never wears protective gear when beekeeping, swarms are generally not aggressive and you can work around them with minimal risk of being stung.
