Summer Share Week Eight

Posted on August 27th, 2021 by Lorraine Blackwell

We have some delicious organic sweet corn from Fair Fields Farm again this week! This will be the last time for corn, so be sure to swap for it if you would like some. We also have another co-production from Funky Ferments: sauerkraut made from our own farm-grown cabbage. All of Funky Ferments products are full of natural fermented goodness and this sauerkraut is no different. We've been enjoying spoonful or two every day!

All the summer veggies are still going strong this week and will continue through the middle of September. But you will start to notice the more typical fall crops creep in after this week. The first of the winter squash will be harvested soon, the storage onions are all currently harvested and curing in the greenhouse, and the arugula is about 2 weeks away from harvest ready. The transitions between one season's vegetables to the next are some of my favourite times in the garden. All the fall crops (other than 2022 garlic) have been planted in the fields. All that is left to plant is some late fall greens in the greenhouse, once some of the tomatoes wind down.

We are still patiently waiting for the bell peppers to ripen in quantity. For us, we usually don't have large amounts ripen until mid-September, and then they ripen all at once. Coming soon!
