Summer Share Week Nine

Posted on September 3rd, 2021 by Lorraine Blackwell

School is about to start and this is now our second last week of the summer shares (fall shares start the week of September 27th). This summer has just flown by and I've been pleased with the production of the summer crops and the fall crops are also looking great. For anyone that 'held' a share earlier in the summer season and have not yet claimed a double share, you will need to do that this week or next. Held shares cannot be doubled up in a separate season (ie. fall).

I started the first of the winter squash harvest today and Terran is busy trimming the cured onions to make space for the squash. The squash look beautiful and the butternut squash are particularly plentiful, which tends to be the most popular choice amongst members. The butternuts take a few weeks to cure to full sweetness, though, so the first squash you see will be those that don't need to be fully cured to develop their flavour. These are squash like spaghetti, acorn, and delicata.

I planted 300' of sunflowers this summer and I have been enjoying their gorgeous blooms the last couple of weeks. The sunflower pictured above is a variety whose petals look like big yellow pompoms and I think they are my favourite.
