Summer Share Week Six

Posted on August 12th, 2021 by Lorraine Blackwell

I'm sending this share customization out a day early because there is sooo much bounty available for members that I think I will need to start harvesting early! Mid-August to September is a wonderful time in the market garden because there are many different summer crops hitting their stride and there is great variety to choose from. In addition to our own bumper crops, I am also bringing in some organic sweet corn from Fair Fields Farm for members to swap for or purchase as an extra. I hope to be able to offer it again in late August but organic corn can be fickle so be sure to take advantage this week if you are a sweet corn lover. Our peppers and eggplant are looking great this year and the first of the bell peppers are ripening with more in the coming weeks. This is a good time to put some ratatouille or eggplant parmesan on the menu!

I was annoyed to see that our first planting of carrots was invaded by carrot rust flies, which causes the damage some of you may have noticed on the carrots. I've culled much of the remainder of the carrot bed (the pigs and Rowan's pet rabbit are living large on carrots) except for the best quality carrots, which are available as a swap item this week. Our later plantings of carrots are looking much better and should be available in about two weeks, once they size up.

We are between plantings of salad mix so we are going to skip the salad this week (except for lettuce add-on members) but there is so much other bounty this week I don't think anyone will miss it! It will be back again in future weeks. I also spent some time today seeding spinach, arugula, and tat soi for some variety in fall leafy greens.
