Summer Share Week 9

Posted on September 4th, 2020 by Lorraine Blackwell

Today feels very fall-like here: there is a strong, cool breeze, bright sunny skies, and heavy dew each morning. We are about two or three weeks away from our first fall frost. Our second planting of zucchini is going strong but our cucumbers and basil are succumbing to disease after weeks of heavy harvest. Our tomatoes and peppers are well protected in the greenhouse so they will continue to feed us until at least the end of September.

As many of you know, in addition to growing vegetables, we also raise Kune Kune pigs. Our third sow to have her litter this summer is Pecan and she had her litter on August 15th. The last pig born was backwards and smaller than the rest but with lots of energy. In the beginning, Boot (we call him boot because he has one black foot) had trouble nursing because there was too much competition from his bigger, stronger siblings. So now he has become a bottle pig. Whenever he hears one of us outside, he breaks out of his stall and comes screaming for his bottle. He know that he gets fed in the kitchen so he runs full speed to the house, anxious for his milk. The part that makes this the funniest is that he is lucky if he is 2 lbs soaking wet. So if you ever drive up our driveway, you may see a teeny, tiny black and white pig running full speed out of the driveshed!
