Record Breaking Tempatures

We don't mind one bit to work when its hot, but some of the spring crops that we plant for you don't do well. As we mentioned last week we grow such a wide variety of items that we're typically able to roll with what mother nature brings our way.

Strawberries are slowing way down, its very likely that this is the last week. Please don't forget that week we gave you the freebie quart!

Some of the items that we are going to be offering this week we produce to balance out these wild weather events. So lets take a look at some of these.

  • Cornmeal- We grow an old heirloom variety of corn called Hickory King. This corn takes 4 months to grow to maturity then is left in the field to dry out until December. If we harvest it before it dries out it will mold in storage. We then hand harvest it and store it in the walk cooler (with a heater) over the winter. In spring time we take the husk off the corn, hand shell the kernels off and then take the kernels to be ground in an old time rock gristmill near liberty KY. So why do we go to all this trouble? It make the best cornbread a person has ever tried!-
  • Canned Goods- What's a farmer to do with the tomatoes that they've harvested, but just aren't pretty enough? All the time and effort has been to grow and harvest them. We're fortunate to work with a great cannery in Covington KY.
  • Sweet Potatoes- The sweet potatoes in your share were grown in 2018 and harvested late in the season. If we're careful to maintain the proper humidity and temperature level thru the winter and spring we're able to offer these to you all in the early season.

It looks like this week should be a little cooler and we hope some of the spring crops like Broccoli and Cabbage will start producing their bounty for you.
