Farm Happenings for August 9, 2022

Posted on August 5th, 2022 by Ford Waterstrat

Let's give it up for lettuce this season. Each year we survey our members to learn what things they have enjoyed and things that they wish we would improve upon. We always learn that folks want more fruit- and we wish we could grow more organic fruits successfully in KY but outside of watermelons, cantaloupes, and strawberries- fruits are nearly impossible to grow organically in KY.

Fortunately folks always comment on the fact that they like having fresh salads each week and each year we get a little better at growing them. Fortunately we've not had deer destroy them like we have had in the past and we anticipate having them for..knock on wood... most of the season.

We're excited to be offering some of the winter squashes- Acorn and Spaghetti are ready and butternut will not be far behind.

We've had some plant disease issues on our red slicer tomatoes and as an organic farmer once a disease sets in there is very little that we can do. Fortunately the cherry tomatoes are doing well.

What else- hmmm- should I share the good or the bad? Maybe I'll mix them together? The bad- last week- both of our delivery trucks broke down. The good- we were able to connect with a mechanic in TN ( as we were in route to Knoxville) that graciously offered to put as at the front of his mechanic work and got us back on the road within 3 hours. The Bad... our main delivery truck a sweet 2015 Ford f650 with refrideration unit- has quit working on 4 of 10 cylinders and Uncle Jimmy and I have spent 4 days diagnosing, repairing, spending money, and scratching our heads... and it is still not working correctly. The other unique thing about this truck (other than it is newer than any other vehicle on the farm) is that it is powered by Natural Gas- (more enviornmentally friendly) and guess what... no one from here to timbuck 2 will work on it- guess I should have thought about that before I bought it :) We can always rent a uhaul if we have dbl break down agains and there is a farmer discount :) Yeah right!

Ok- enough for now- Thank you for letting us be your farm family. I always tell folks- Farming is fun- running a farming buisness is......

And please always know- despite the challenges- you deserve a great selection of vegetables each week- please reach out if we ever let you down. We stand behind our 100% satisfaction Gaurantee
