Drowned Garden Plants

Posted on July 20th, 2021 by Ron Meyer

Relentless rain the past few weeks (with almost an inch of rain many days) has been hard on our crops. Lettuce and root crops have suffered most, but others are showing damage, too. We even almost lost some kale plants! And kale has been our most reliable producer over the years, in both wet and dry weather. Beet greens wilted, dill plants are pretty much kaput, and basil leaves began turning yellow. Now that we have dryer weather again, we’re salvaging what we can and hoping plants recover.

This week we have cucumbers on the farm stand for the first time. The cucumber plants were so lush that Ron couldn’t see the fruits, and when he finally got down on hands and knees and moved the leaves aside, he found good-sized cucumbers! Also new this week are a few flower bouquets. Now that the sun has come out again, we should have more blooms in the coming weeks. The zucchini continues to produce lots of fruits, and this week we have yellow summer squash as well. We have a small amount of salad mix, and plenty of blueberries, green beans, beets, eggs, and garlic.

Again, if there are ever any problems with your produce, please contact us. We want to know, and we want to make it right.
