Grateful for Rain and Fresh Tomatoes!

Posted on August 18th, 2020 by Ron Meyer

We're giving thanks for the inch plus of rain we had on Saturday and Sunday. Things were pretty parched, so the growing things are giving thanks, too. Tomato season is now in full swing, and we have lots of tomatoes available this week.

Cherokee Purple (seen in photo) is one of the first heirloom tomatoes to ripen in the summer, and we have the best-looking crop of them we've ever had. Cherokee Purple is a dusky purple-pink and delivers delicious, sweet flavor. The seeds date back to before 1890, and are an old Cherokee Indian heirloom, according to the seed catalog. Evidently these tomatoes like dry weather, too, with a bit of irrigation. We have plenty of these beauties available.

Galahad tomatoes are new for us this season. They are a hybrid red beefsteak tomato that we planted instead of Big Beef, which wasn't available this year. Galahad's color is deceiving, because it's a lighter red and may not appear fully ripe. It is ripe, though, and we've been pleasantly surprised with its sweetness.

Also available this week: carrots, arugula, beets, lots of green beans, kale, ground cherries, some green onions, flowers and more.
