Farm Happenings for June 15, 2020

Posted on June 12th, 2020 by Emma Rainwater

Hi Friends! I hope you're all enjoying this beautiful sunshine.

The last several days have felt like mid July instead of early June. The solstice on the 21st marks the official beginning of summer, but the weather doesn't seem to agree.

Our garlic plants are certainly enjoying the warmth. The garlic scapes (the flower of the plant) are popping up like rockets! Picking the scapes ensures a larger head of garlic in the future, and lets us enjoy their slightly sweet flavor well before the cloves themselves are ready for harvest. Try grilling them for a sweet and tender garlicky side dish. Pickling them keeps a crispy fresh reminder of spring in your refrigerator. I like to cut them into sections and saute them like a green bean- in hot oil with a little kosher salt.

The farm welcomes you once again to the season of scapes, blooming peony flowers, the first fireflies, and the transition from spring to summer. Enjoy!
