Aww: Our 1st Veggie Boxes of the Season!

Posted on June 7th, 2022 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Ok, I'd better make this good: it's our 1st week of veggie boxes!

It really warms my heart to look through the CSA membership list and see so many familiar names. Thank you all SO much for jumping back in this year. It is a huge deal for me that you trust us to keep trying our best to make this a good investment for you, so thank you.

And to all the new faces, I'm super excited to meet you! Thank you for giving the CSA program a try.

Here's a little update on what's happening on the farm:

We always try to send out a little update on how things are going each week with the customization email. Truth be told, I'm nervous for a few reasons at this time of year. The cold April and May has set us back a bit, and a lot of the plantings had a rough start. A lot of them are really popping now, but some just look sad, especially those that are cold-sensitive, like the squash, basil, and tomatoes. I am hoping they pick up soon, or we replant some things and we end up just having them a little later in the season.

The river is also quite high. As many of you know, one of our plots is on a floodplain, which flooded in 2020. If it happens again, I'll let you all know of course. So far, we are just keeping an eye on it and are sandbagging the low point where the water came in.

Spring is just a time of year that is full of uncertainty with a market garden, so it can be stressful. But also exciting! In retrospect usually. And there are also many things to be thankful for. We have another awesome team this year, some of whom you will meet I'm sure: Regina, Maria, and Ethan. They are hard workers with very kind hearts, and I feel very lucky. And despite the river, this rain is also really nice for the veggies! All in all, we're loving being outside and doing our best to fill up the garden, and grow consistently.

We hope you love your 1st veggie boxes! Now onto some housekeeping...

BOXES

We are distributing weekly shares in cardboard boxes again this year. As we've done in the past, we really appreciate any that come back to us: we had to order a new shipment this year, so any that we can reuse will keep the costs of the CSA program down as much as possible. If you pick up at Mint & Lime, they will kindly hold onto them until I pick them up, or you can return your boxes at either farmers market (Friday or Tuesday), or leave it at your front door if you have home delivery.

For folks who are picking up at Mint & Lime on Tuesdays, please do try to pick up on the Tuesday as they do not have any cold storage for leftover veggie boxes!

SHARE VALUE ADJUSTMENT

With the first couple weeks being rather skint when it comes to variety, I adjusted the box value for all shares this first week (regulars and smalls) to $25. We don't want to force you to eat 10lbs of salad mix! I am keeping track of this adjusted value so we can add it to a week later in the season, when we have a lot more variety.

Ok, I think that's it for now, everyone. If you have any trouble customizing your share for the coming week, please let me know or get in touch with Harvie's support team: they can help out too! And we'll see you Tuesday.
