Farm Happenings for August 31, 2021

Posted on August 27th, 2021 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Happy Thursday, everyone!

Lovely to see some rain out there. Really hoping things have time to green up again.....before the snow flies!

We sourced some lovely Sieglinde potatoes from both Silver Birch Farm and Buck Ridge Ranch and Gardens this week. Sieglindes are a popular yellow, thin-skinned potato of German or Austrian origin. They are great because not only do they have a delicate texture and taste, but they also store really well for a potato that is so delicate.

There are some bagged carrots in this week's shares that are also from Silver Birch Farm because our new carrot beds still need another week or so before they're ready.

Our winter squash are also almost good to go! The first to mature are delicata, acorn, and spaghetti. Butternuts are usually last to cross the finish line. Hoping to get some to you in the next couple weeks!

Wanted to mention to you all (as you've probably started to notice anyway) that....it's aphid season. They show up early to mid-August as the nights get more damp and cool. I don't love it but that's organic food growing. Not much you can do about them. They hang out in lettuce mainly and other leafy hiding spots like radish and turnip greens. If you give them a soak in salted water, they will lift off more easily. Sorry about this!

We are going into our 12th week of CSA shares. HUGE thanks to all of you for investing in the farm this year - the CSA program truly is an investment and we hope you feel you're getting a good return. If not, please let me know, always! We are still aiming to go into the 2nd week of October, weather permitting, so 6-7 more weeks.

Thanks, everyone. See you Tues!

Your Farmer,

Brianna
