Farm Happenings for August 14, 2022

Posted on August 11th, 2022 by Grayson Crane

Hi CSA Members,

We're at the half way point! And while we're halfway through the main season, we've already seeded, planted and irrigated an extra acre of fall and winter veggies. This time of year is funny--it's officially tomato season, and most of the hot crops (eggplant, peppers, and more) are just about ready. Meanwhile, we've got a 45 day window to plant anything we want for the tail end of the season in our main fields. That may sound like a good chunk of time, and it is, but it limits us to more of the shorter crops like arugula, lettuce, radishes, turnips, and maybe maybe beets.  Part of the motivation of having a separate fall/winter field for this year is so we can really stick the landing on our cover cropping. The goal is to have everything out of the main fields by mid-September--no exceptions! Cover cropping is one of the main and most important tools we use for building soil health and keeping everything fresh for the next year.

This week finally brings those tomatoes--we'll be seeing those in boxes or as an option until likely mid-October. As the harvest chugs along I'll reach out with opportunities to bulk buy (likely in September) if you're interested in canning.

Thanks!
