Farm Happenings for August 7, 2022

Posted on August 4th, 2022 by Grayson Crane

Hi Folks,

On to another week--we're really seeing the new back field take off, which is exciting and excellent timing. We had plans to add an acre in this year, however the unrelenting wet of this spring (remember that?) had us changing things on the fly. The plan was to open the back field, cover crop it one more time, and then use it for fall--but we had to switch things up and now the back field is holding it down for the mid/late season goodies. Luckily, we've had some experience now with going from pasture to veggies and the back field is looking pretty great.

The process started with the sheep back in the winter and into the early spring--getting them on the field grazing down early grass to stunt its growth. This also helped reduce the amount of tractor work we'd have to do later on. Then we plowed, disked twice, and off it went into vegetables.

This week brings some new goodies. Pretty soon you'll be seeing tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant!
