Week #11: Eating with the Seasons

Posted on August 16th, 2018 by Robyn Calvey

PLEASE NOTE the NEW CUT-OFF TIME for making changes to your share is NOW LATER on Sunday (10pm) so you have more time to customize!

***soon to come veggies: chard, parsley, onions, tomatoes, peppers (hot and sweet), gold beets, broccoli, zukes and cukes***

Eating with the Seasons

The Solanaceae season is upon us....tomatoes and peppers galore.  We are still hoping that our eggplant plants (also in that family) will turn around and start producing more but it doesn't look hopeful.  Potatoes are also in the Solanaceae family.  We just placed our potato order (over 2 tons!) with Igl Farms in Antigo.  They will start harvesting in late September.  They grow amazing certified organic potatoes much better than our soil every could.

As for tomatoes and peppers, we got you covered.  Tomatoes are in abundance around here and we will soon start offering them in bulk.  Watch your emails for more information.  Canning and freezing veggies is EASY so don't be afraid to give it a try.  Peppers are so easy they don't even need to be cooked first...just chop and freeze!

Eating with the seasons can be overwhelming but it is also so rewarding.  You have to eat when the eatin' is good.  So when you see all the tomatoes in your box...remember when the snow flies you will wish you had one around for a REAL B.L.T.  :)   And remember, you can always swap out some of your tomatoes for other items that are available.  But again...my advise is to eat up.  Because there is simply no winter tomato around these parts that will come anywhere near the flavor of the ones you are getting now.
