Farm Happenings for May 10, 2021

Posted on May 1st, 2021 by Tim Vrieselaar

Hello all and a belated welcome to our Spring Season.  There are new names on the list and we welcome you to our journey.

It has again proved to be an action packed week on the farm!  From tilling the winter cover crops in, laying mulch beds and finishing strawberry planting, getting irrigation set up and running and today planting all the potatoes.  It sure is getting busy on the farm!

We ran the pivot around the field to make sure it was all up and running good...and found some very soft spots!  Even though it has been dry....our soil is actually in very good condition.  But the low spots in the field are a real challenge for the pivot.  It got stuck a few times on its trip and so we ordered a load of gravel to fill the problem spots in the pivot tracks.  Aaron was busy filling the tracks....when he suddenly sank!  He was stuck tight!  Thankfully the neighbor in a bigger tractor was able to pull him back up onto dry ground.  Just a day in the life of a farmer!

Today saw the arrival of our new flock of hens. We also have a greenhouse that is filling fuller by the day...and drinking lots of water with all those plants.  The greenhouse is doing fantastic with the double poly this time!  With lots of strong wind yesterday it just has a squeak inside and no flapping plastic anymore.  The inflation between the 2 layers does wonders to keep the plastic tight and secure in our winds.

It has been a wonderful, sunny, busy week on the farm!  We can't wait to start harvesting fresh crops for our members....but until then we will continue to bring you the best we can from as close as possible....

Wishing you all a wonderful week!

Tim has just asked me to add...there are frozen chickens available for purchase...this is not part of the meat share but can just be purchased extra.  It's your chance to try one...without the meat share commitment...
