End of June Farm Happenings and detail, June 27th 2019

Posted on June 24th, 2019 by Timothy Lyon

It is important to start well, as they say, and that's why we use non-GMO, organic seed. From there we try to maintain organic standards in all our farm practices, carefully tending the soil and considering the effect of our farming on the surrounding earth as we take each step. If you'd like to know more about how we farm, come on out to the field for a visit. We see it as your field too, as you are a farm member and participate economically and digestively by paying for and eating the food we grow. You may even schedule to work alongside us for a few hours. We're in this together.

So, when we are faced with a long rainy Spring, we must face that reality together as a farm too. Until now, we had not seen many effects of the grand precipitation we've been getting. But, with asparagus and rhubarb dwindling we suddenly realised there's not as much growing - thus not as much to send you fresh from the field - as there usually is by June. Thank you for eating along with us while we've been sending much more Winter stored veg than we usually do, and even adding in our dried produce (garlic powder, tomatoes, shiitake mushrooms) to give you some variety.

Now, though, the Spring crops which are in the ground are starting to size up, So you're seeing more fresh from the field content in your shares.

Late and forgotten pickups

We'll be honest, late and forgotten pickups add a lot of work to our week when we try to get those shares to you. As Tracy says, please put your pickup time in your calendar and add a notification. Tell your friends, co-workers and family about it - "I'm going to pick up my farm fresh food from Main Street Urban Farm after this!" And, if you anticipate you'll be late or not make it please drop us a line, call or send a friend or family member. As usual we will make several attempts to get your basket to you, but as it warms up we begin immediately donating any shares left behind to Lovinspoonful unless we have received a message from you. That way the food stays fresh and reaches hungry tummies in good shape.

It's 6am and raining, great planting weather, so I must get off this computer and off to the field.

May your eating be nourishing, sustaining and naturally delicious (not to mention local, organic and non-GMO!)
