Week 17 - Yay, fall greens and cooler weather.

Week 17 of the CSA and the shadows are getting long with the shade been cool and the sun hot. It has been a classic start to a Colorado fall. Personally I am over the hot temps but it is allowing us to get the last little bit of summer crops out of the fields. This years extended cool and wet spring/summer weather really delayed the flow of the season and now we are seeing our first real cool weather coming up next week. We have already seen temps in the mid 30's as our farm is always 10 degrees cooler that the weather forecast and weather stations and I am fully anticipating our first freeze next week.

Being weeks behind and the first freeze being weeks early feel like another blow delivered in a season of body blows. I guess this is just part of the life of a farmer. We are going to be harvesting any frost sensitive crops we can between now and Tuesday. One of the nice things about my system is that with some proper feeding, we may be able to help the plants soldier on until the classic Indian Summer arrives. I am hoping that we can continue the abundance of the last few weeks as long as we can

This week I am very excited to have our salad mix and braising greens back in the shares. The weather this year and the accompanying soil compaction has made growing good salad a real struggle, but the current succession looks and tastes fantastic.

Hopefully the cooler weather is going bring a sweetness to our fall plantings of cabbages, broccoli and spinach. Now we just need to watch the weather and hope for the best.

With gratitude,

The Farmers at Kilt Farm

Fruit Share

Apples and pears are in season so let's dive into some other varieties. This week the fruit share will have a bag of Fuji Apples and Asian pears.

We will have Asian Pears, Bartlett Pears, Plums, Fuji and Honey Crisp apples available in the add on section for those that do not have a fruit share.

Sadly all this must come to an end and this week marks the end of the 12 week fruit share. We will continue to have fruit available for purchase as an add on share through out the remainder of the CSA season.

Thank you so much for being a member of the farm. We can't do it with out you.
