CSA Week 17, Fall means harvest and cleaning up.

Posted on September 25th, 2020 by Michael Moss

Happy Fall. We made it to the Equinox. Even though the temps till feel quite summery, I am now driving to the farm and back home with my lights on the truck. Fall it is. Maybe soon the temps will moderate and the rain will come. Until then we will just keep crushing it at the farm.

This past week we harvested and processed 1.5 tons of green cabbage. It was an amazing sight to see the staff harvesting and loading the cabbage in one fell swoop that took less than an hour. It was a beautiful thing to see and now we have one full walking dedicated to cabbage. This week we also harvested the last of the peppers. It is always sad and wonderful at the same time when I mow down all the peppers. They have fed us well and these are plenty for this week and next.

This week we are loading up the shares with two unique little winter squashes, the Red Kuri and the Kabocha. These are delicious and I never can seem to grow enough of them. The are sweet and delicious, enjoy.

Oh, the clean up part of the week. One we harvest our summer crops, it is time to harvest the field materials. We use plastic to cover our beds at our Gunbarrel farm. This allows us to minimize the water we use and maximize the amount of heat in the soil. Plus the plastic helps reduce the overwhelming amount weeding. Now that the cops are done we remove all of this material. This week with the help of the Mobile Farm Workforce crew we pulled up over 4 miles of plastic. By the end of day yesterday we were all very sore, dirty and tired. The Kilt Farm Krewe is amazing and I am very blessed to have such an amazing team.

Fruit Shares - Dust off your apple recipes and preserving techniques. This week we have a medium bag of Swiss Gourmet Apples and a small bag of Johnathan Apples .

Flowers - OMG, we may be only getting bouquets of lilys but they are so beautiful and make my house smell so amazing. Make sure you grab a bouquet for yourself or your sweetie this week.

Enjoy your food and you first full week of fall.
