Farm Happenings for first week of December

Posted on November 30th, 2019 by Jenny Jackson

Hope you all had a relaxing Thanksgiving! We enjoyed some time at Miramar Beach with Chris' family. The water was chilly but the weather was warm and sunny so we waded into the gorgeous clear Gulf water for a precious few days before returning to the farm Saturday night. Very thankful one of our local employees was able to come in to water the greenhouse for us while we were away. The microgreens require watering a few times a day and even though we have sprinklers on timers, it still takes a human checking each and every tray to be sure they are not too wet or too dry.

Don't forget, if you still have a credit for the skipped Thanksgiving week share, you've got 3 more weeks to use it by ordering the extras that are listed on Harvie. You can see the amount of your credit under "my profile."

We have planted all our strawberry plants for next year and had some plants left over, so I've included them on the list for your shares in case anyone wants to get some for your personal gardens. Planting in the winter gives the plants time to get established so they can start fruiting in the spring. Basically you get earlier fruit if you plant now, and they are perennial so you won't have to replant for many years.

Some exciting new fruits are on the list this week too, from Randle Farms in Auburn (where the Asian Persimmons come from). Satsumas are sweet orange type fruits that are super easy to peel. Meyer Lemons are sweeter than regular lemons. I can't wait to make salted, preserved lemons with these!

Also something new on the list this week is Escarole, which is a bitter green that's more popular in Europe than here. It looks like lettuce, but you'll want to cook this one to mellow out the bitterness. Its often used in this escarole and bean soup recipe
