Farm Happenings for August 5th

Posted on August 5th, 2022 by Jenny Jackson

As summer winds down we are reflecting on the season. Overall its been a good one, but also strange in some ways. For the first time ever, we were not able to coax an okra crop. Nematodes have found our farm and they destroy okra plants. For the past few years we've been able to get abundant harvests before they kill them completely, but not this year. Very strange to have an okra-less summer. We are usually swimming in it this time of year.

About a month ago we had flash flooding like we've never seen here before. Six inches of rain fell in a couple of hours, completely flooding our main building and the lowest fields, which included some beautiful green bean and squash/zucchini plants. Those plants never fully recovered and we were only able to get a meager harvest. Thankfully nothing else was damaged.

We are grateful for good harvests and adequate amounts of rain otherwise. We are ready for the heat to wane. It feels like the hottest and most humid summer ever! The farm is now mostly covered in soil building summer cover crops like the sun hemp pictured here. The greenhouse is filling up with fall plant babies such as kale, cabbage, chard, beets, parsley, dill, lettuce and much more.

Only 2 more shares left for this season.
