Farm Happenings for 1st week of October

Posted on October 5th, 2019 by Jenny Jackson

Dear farm members,

Somehow the early fall crops have pushed through the hottest September ever recorded. Pictured above are beautiful turnip greens, radishes, Napa cabbage and broccoli plants. We are more than ready for the lower temps that have finally arrived. The more comfortable weather will certainly be good for morale of the farmers as well as plant life. We'll finally be able to plant some crops that we've been waiting to put out until it was cooler, like spinach and more carrots, broccoli and cauliflower.

Its been over a month since we've had rain here, so we were hopeful that some rain would fall this week too. To be honest, this extreme weather is depressing when your livelihood depends on it. Constantly running the irrigation from sun up to sun down, enduring the temperatures in the 90s for 5 months (because summer arrived early this year) all the while wondering, "how hot is it going to be when Tulsi is our age??"  And "how are we ever going to convince a younger generation to take on the burden of coaxing food from what feels like a foresaken, scorched earth?".  Hopefully the summer time blues will be alleviated when temperatures (and please rain!) fall this week. We are certainly grateful for your support as we carry on even in trying times! Your encouragement and appreciation of chemical- free, fresh food keeps us going.

your farmers,

Jenny and Chris
