Farm Happenings for September 21, 2023

Posted on September 18th, 2023 by Ilene Freedman

 CHANGE OF THE SEASONS

This week is the second to last CSA pickup for our main season CSA. Last pickup is Sept 28-30. Then Fall CSA begins, Oct 5-Nov 18. Join Fall CSA now to enjoy our fall bounty.

Renewals for next year will begin in October. Do you have some friends who would enjoy CSA next year? Help us spread the word to your friends.

WHAT'S GROWING ON

Really feels like fall with the dip in temperatures and the harvest of squashes and sweet potatoes. We are harvesting butternut squash, pie pumpkins and sweet potatoes this next couple weeks.

The streak of lettuce harvest continues? Phil has been a lettuce magician, through the summer heat and the drought of 2023. Grateful for his persistence.

Sweet potato greens are the leaves, popular in Africa...they taste like mild spinach! Sautee them down. A welcome dark leafy vegetable during a transition time before leafy's come back in the fall months.

Pie pumpkins are limited, we hope everyone who wants one can get one. We have lots of butternut though. Did you know butternut squash can be substituted for pumpkin in any recipe, even pie? Works great!

DIGGIN THE SWEETS

Watch my notices for news of a sweet potato dig. We will try to invite you to help with the treasure hunt. We are balancing the timing of their readiness, the dampness of the soil for digging, and the timing to try to get them cured and ready before main season wraps up Sept 30.

FALL EXTENSION SHARE

It's time NOW to sign up for Fall Extension shares so you can enjoy the harvest through October and November. Anticipated harvests for fall include bodacious greens, sweet potatoes and butternut squash, broccoli, cauliflower and more. You can include farm fresh ingredients in your Thanksgiving feast!
