Pop-Up Week #1

Posted on October 3rd, 2020 by Bonnie and Rudy Geber

Remember to stop by your chosen pick up location this week to grab your produce boxes! This week is the final Farmers Market at Libby, so be sure to stop by to check out all of your favorite vendors once more for the season.

If we had to pick a crop that has been especially noteworthy this week, it would be carrots. We've harvested and bunched quite a lot of carrots (orange and rainbow) for the market tomorrow. And we also began harvesting our storage carrot block. We only have one bed out of seven harvested, but it's allowed us to have several 5# bulk bags for market. We'll plan to finish harvesting the block in the next week or two and have bulk carrots that folks can order to enjoy into the winter. Carrots can be stored for several months providing they are in good condition and kept a the right temperature and humidity. You can store carrots in your refrigerator with good results, and can store larger quantities in a root cellar or other cold storage area.

Well, we have a confession to make...We've finally made a mistake that we've been leery of making for YEARS! We grow 3 different types of microgreens (pea, sunflower and radish), all three of those combined make up our Rainbow Mix. We grow and harvest the three types separately and then combine them into the mix. We've literally cautioned ourselves countless times to..'remember to take out the individual types for packaging before mixing...'. But today, we finally did it, we mixed before we took out the pea shoots for your boxes. And, before you ask..NO!...once they're mixed they really can't be unmixed, lol. So if you have pea shoots coming in your box this week, you'll have Rainbow Mix instead. If that's a problem for you (say you're allergic to sunflower, or don't like the taste of radish), just let us know when you pick up and we'll substitute for something else of your choosing. In a way, we're a little bit glad that we finally made this error, because it's been hanging over our heads as an inevitable slip up for so long!

We have really enjoyed this warm fall weather we've been having, but it does look like it'll be cooling off soon. So remember to get outside and soak up the sun while it lasts.

Cheers, Rudy & Bonnie
