CSA Week 6 - Zucchini, cherry tomatoes, plums + peaches!

Posted on July 5th, 2020 by Mike Nolan

Welcome to July, the month of tomatoes, summer squash and fruit galore. It has been HOT on the farm! This week, Farmer Mike is grateful that Earth Spring is part of an aquifer that supplies us with a natural source of water, because the fields need it non-stop. Some veggies like the napa cabbage, tomatoes and summer squash are loving the heat. We're loving an afternoon dip in the cold spring out front.

New This Week

- Napa Cabbage: Not only is this crisp and refreshing cabbage great for quick pickles, salads or stir-fry, but you can also throw it on the grill! That's the ticket for summer cooking. Try it out with this recipe.

- Fruit for sale! The fruit share this week is a quart of plums from Peters Orchards. But we wanted to share the bounty with everyone, so we put quarts of plums and peaches up for sale as extras in the farm store this week! Look for them with the farm products while you're customizing your share. Speaking of grilling things...grilled peaches, anyone?

Coming Soon

- Cucumbers, spaghetti squash, delicata, peppers
- Flower bouquets and flower shares! Farmer Mike's wife, Diem, and daughter, Sage and Harper, have been hard at work creating a whole new offering from the farm. We've always planted flowers to encourage bees to pollinate, and as a part of our integrated pest management system. Diem decided to take it a few steps further, and is now cultivating an amazing variety of flowers on the farm. Sage and Harper have been helping to make bouquets for the farmers market each weekend, and Sage has also been taking incredible photos to share in the farm's Instagram Stories. We'll be offering flower shares soon, so your home can be blessed with a bit of beauty, while helping us support the essential bee population in our local area.

Weekly Reminders

1. Extras are packed OUTSIDE the box.
We only pack veggies inside the CSA boxes, so when you order cheese, bread, meat, etc...anything that ISN'T veggies, please remember to pick it up from the coolers + bins at the drop point. Extras will be listed on your label, so be sure to review your label and find everything you ordered! If you need help at the drop point, either ask market staff, email morgan@earthspring.farm, or call Farmer Mike: 717-805-7778.

2. Speaking of boxes...there IS a correct way to break them down! The wax produce boxes we send each week are expensive, and part of a bigger effort towards sustainability in our program. They can be reused for a long time if they're broken down correctly. Here's a refresher on the proper steps:

Market staff can also show you how it works. For the Palisades folks who don't have a staff member at their location, feel free to email any questions.

3. Milk Bottle Returns: Remember to write your name in Sharpie (yes, it's totally okay!) so we can track your returns. Thanks!

That's it for this week. We're really excited about the next few weeks of harvest and hope you're enjoying your produce with your family. Enjoy your week!

Be well,

Morgan + The Earth Spring Farm Team
