Farm Happenings for July 13-14, 2022

Posted on July 10th, 2022 by Gail and Maurice Smith

The pollinators are working hard this summer.  Driving through the fields in the 6 wheeler the smell of blooming white clover is almost overpowering on a hot summer day.  The bees are happy.  We have clover planted between all our one acre plots of vegetables.  The milkweed plants are also in full bloom.  We can never decide if they smell like lilacs or clover.  Usually we see numerous monarchs in the pasture flitting from one flower to the next.  Unfortunately not so far this year.

Hopefully you had a fun and safe 4th of July celebration.  The crops barely grew in the last terrible dry week.  It is bad when your weeds are wilting!  The rain showers seem to be going just north or south of us.  We live in a dust bowl.  Somehow the summer squash (zucchini) plants grew.  Their roots must have made it down far enough to find some moisture.  Whoop, whoop!  At least we have some early greens that survived.  After the long winter and cold spring we need those greens to get our body systems back on track.

Take care everyone.  As always you are welcome to come to the farm for a visit.
