Early Winter Farm Share Week 4 of 6

Posted on November 28th, 2021 by Gail and Maurice Smith

Thanksgiving was met with a renewed sense of its original purpose by most this 2021 year.  We hope this season has left you refreshed and with renewed purposes.  DragSmith Farms thanks all of you for your continued support of our efforts to bring good healthy food to your table to sustain you and your families.

Maurice is always on the hunt for good organic food and helping out other farmers.   This past week he came across organic fruit from some farms in California and Washington.  We all know how the harsh environment has affected the west coast this past season and find it amazing that we are able to enjoy any fruit this season.  Back in the day, as Gail remembers it, we had to can fruit in jars in order to have any fruit beyond apples and oranges for the winter. We are offering Cosmic Crisp apples (Washington State's rival to our beloved Honey Crisp), Granny Smith apples, Kiwi, Pomegranates, and Bartlett Pears.  Each are organic.

The photo is our one and only pomegranate DragSmith Farms has ever grown....yes, we actually had a fruit.  Our pomegranate bush actually grows in a large pot.  It is about 4 years old and was believed to die in the tornado destruction in 2019, but, this year the poor looking little shrub took on a new look in our hot summer.  It had 3-4 flowers.  Each glossy deep red flower turned into a fruit ever so slowly.  The branches weighted down with the fruit.  The difficult strong winds ripped some of the fruit off before maturity.  One hung on. Joyfully, the whole "Produce Squad" was able to do a taste test.

As always, have a great week and come to the farm to check out the wreath and patio pot making progress.  Boughs, branches, bows, decorations etc. have been gathered.  We start on Monday creating those winter displays. We want them to be fresh for your winter enjoyment.
