Farm Share Week 6

Posted on July 25th, 2021 by Gail and Maurice Smith

Whoop, whoop, we received 2" of rain on Friday night.  Looked at the rain gauge with a double take.  Knew the storm didn't last long.  The water puddles weren't large.  The earth just sucked it right up.  To late for most crops, but, will certainly help.

The above photo is a hummingbird moth.  They are a fascinating pollinator.  Flitting from one flower to the next just like a bee or hummingbird.  We grow native plants to sell.  Many people are incorporating native plants for pollinators and to get rid of so much lawn mowing. One of them is a butterfly weed.  Found one such butterfly weed covered with 13 monarch caterpillars.  To say the least, the plant was reduced to a stick.  I moved them outside onto milkweed.  The point of growing plants for pollinators was demonstrated vividly.

Our week will begin with lots of pea, broccolini and summer squash picking.  Hope yours goes good.
