Farm Happenings for June!

Posted on May 31st, 2019 by Melinda Hollyfield

Happy June!

We hope everyone has enjoyed their month of grass-fed goodness, and if this is your first delivery with us - thank you for letting us feed you!
Here on the farm, we have been busy with the arrival of almost 100 lambs and 9 spunky calves. There is more grass than the livestock can eat so we are rolling it up into hay bales for winter feed. By carefully timing the cutting of our hay, we capture enough energy and protein so that even in the cold of winter, our 100% grass-fed animals are nourished.
This careful management throughout the year is what creates a distinct flavor profile and marbling in our products. While grass-fed meat is inevitably leaner than grain-finished, the fat is more nutrient dense. The contents in your meat CSA are nourishing you and your family with omega 3 fatty acids which is the GOOD fat! This essential part of a healthy diet benefits your body and mind. You need this fat in your life! To make this even better, grass-fed meats contain up to 5x more Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) which prompted fat burning and muscle building. That is some serious bang for your buck! And you know the best part? The animals are happy, the land is improving from our grazing practices (have you seen this Ted Talk?), and every year we see more native wildlife and wildflowers around the farm.
The time and attention that it takes to raise your grass finished and pasture raised meat should be the attitude you have when preparing your grass-fed goodness. Check out this article about cooking the perfect grass-fed steak! You’ll gain some more insight into why your grass-fed steak is different and just so delicious.

We hope you love your share this month knowing that it is so good for you and the earth!
Don’t forget to check out our extras! Before Sunday night at 8:00, you can add whole chickens, 3 different types of bread (our favorite is the Pain Au Lait!!), and any steak, roast, chop, or sausage you like!

Eat well, be well -
