Farm Happenings for January 11, 2022

Posted on January 6th, 2022 by Melinda Hollyfield

Hello!

We are currently sitting in a few inches of beautiful snow in our lovely little corner of Middle Tennessee. We hope you’re staying safe and enjoying the snow. Here are a few updates from the farm:

We are finishing up our new livestock overwintering barn at our Lock Seven property. We will use this barn to feed hay over the Winter and collect manure to spread over our hay and grain fields, thus reducing imported nutrient applications. We’re raising our own nutrients!

We are working with a group of breeders and researchers who are developing corn varieties that are “nitrogen-fixing”, meaning they do not need nitrogen fertilizers to grow. Since corn is one of our country’s most heavily fertilized crops (leading to water pollution across the country), we are proud to be a part of this research!

Our cover crops (winter rye, barley, vetch, triticale, tillage radish,) are growing slowly and steadily through the Winter’s cold temperatures. These cover crops keep our soil covered and provide organic matter to our soils in the Spring.

Sending love from our farm to your home,

The Team at Caney Fork Farms
