October 1st Farm Happening

Posted on October 1st, 2021 by Melinda Hollyfield

It's October and my goodness we are excited about this new season. At some point in late fall we'll start to "chill" a little bit, but right now we are still in full swing. We are working hard planting and transplanting greens and roots for our winter CSA, and trying to cover any bare land in cover crop. We just harvested 140 acres worth of hay for our animals to eat this winter, and now we are seeding all that land in a mix of rye, vetch and radish - crops that will not only suppress weeds, but actually help to build healthier soil! While feeding YOU is our biggest priority, growing crops that will feed our animals (particularly during winter) is also essential to creating a healthy farm organism.

While most of our pigs will be ready to be slaughtered in November, we sent 8 of them to the processor last week. We won't get that pork back in time for this week's CSA, but you will definitely get to enjoy lots of fresh pork next month! We'll be cleaning out our shelves this week and sending all the remaining 2020 pork harvest (which isn't much) to make room for the new. Expect lots of beef and lamb as we await all the fresh 2021 pork.

What are you cooking with your meat and veggies? Join our Caney Fork Farms CSA Facebook group and let us know! We hope to use this FB group to help folks mix and mingle and inspire each other with new recipes.

AUTO-RENEW:

It's happening TODAY (Oct 1st)! Once you receive an email from Harvie with your order details, you'll have one week to sign into your Harvie account and make changes to your order (like add a meat CSA share, swap locations, switch to our new WEEKLY pick up option). Orders will be finalized on Oct. 8th. Please note there are some changes to our schedule & delivery options for next season that are listed in the email I sent earlier this week. If you didn't get that email or are confused about how to edit your auto-renew settings, email me (Natalie) at info@caneyforkfarms.com.
