September 24th CSA Happening

Posted on September 24th, 2021 by Melinda Hollyfield

We have officially crossed the threshold into fall and my goodness how our minds and bodies are feeling the change. This incredible weather has us enjoying tasks that were honestly quite challenging at the peak of summer. Our veggie team has been planting beds of kale, broccoli, turnips, radishes, chard, cabbages and more. The timing was perfect as we got a solid few days of rain afterward. The next items to plant will be kohlrabis and rutabagas.  We continue to harvest truckloads of winter squash out of the fields (it's definitely our bumper crop this year) and soon we'll be harvesting sweet potatoes - yum! We also managed to get our corn out of the field before all that rain. Once it's fully dried out, we'll grind it and send it to you as cornmeal!

In your next veggie box you can expect some of the usual suspects - beets, carrots, lettuce - as well as honeynut squash, french breakfast radishes and hakurei turnips. You'll also receive some Italian greens, probably escarole, which is a bitter, leafy green. If the bitter flavor isn't your cup of tea, try braising or sautéing the greens. That will take a lot of the bitterness out.

Have you joined the Caney Fork Farms CSA Facebook group yet? It's a space to share recipes, receive updates from the farm, and meet your fellow CSA members. Join & let us know what you're cooking!

AUTO-RENEW:

Earlier this week I sent out an email about auto-renew for the Winter CSA taking place October 1st. If you are eligible for auto-renew, you'll get an email on Oct. 1st with you order. You will have 7 days to make any changes to your subscription (like add a meat share, switch to WEEKLY veggie deliveries, change locations, etc). Orders will be finalized and you will be charged your first payment on Oct. 8th. Please note there are some changes to our schedule & delivery options for next season that are listed in the email I sent. If you didn't get that email or are confused about how to edit your auto-renew settings, email me (Natalie) at info@caneyforkfarms.com.
