August 6th CSA Newsletter

It's comin' in hot hot hot, y'all. Our heat loving plants are happy and thriving - which is great news if you love tomatoes. Amazingly, our lettuce is still booming thanks to the help of shade cloth. Usually the lettuce would be scorched in this heat, so we hope you enjoy these late summer salads! You can also expect cucumbers, basil, leeks, potaotos and more in your veggie box this week. Our team is working hard in the gardens to keep the weeds under control and we are beginning to plant seeds for our fall crops. What do you want to eat this winter? Let us know!

In the meat department, our freezer is filled with beef and we could not be more thrilled. This week we'll be sending a bunch of beef products, as we just received a new batch of beef to replenish our shelves. We have been rationing our pork pretty intensely the last few months as we had to go a little over a year without a slaughter date. Luckily, we'll be sending some pigs to be processed late September which is just around the corner. It's a lot of work raising grass-fed animals - moving them every couple of days, mapping out every inch of grazable land, deciding when the animals will land there, and planting cover crops specifically intended to increase soil fertility and provide nutritious food for the animals. Talk about planning ahead! But what a gift, to be building good soil, drawing carbon down from the atmosphere, and raising food for our community. We love it.
