Farm Happenings for August!

Posted on August 2nd, 2019 by Melinda Hollyfield

Greetings members!

Welcome to the Late Summer CSA season! As always, we can't wait to feed you.

So, what's happening on the farm? Our gardens are booming with life so much that we've started offering a stand-alone Bi-weekly Veggie share that you can sign up for separately or in addition to your meat share. Highlights in the veggie share this week are flavorful carrots, greens, fennel, eggplant, herb bundles, and more!! Don't forget many of the veggies will be available as extras, too!

A unique aspect of our farm is that we are a "living laboratory". This means that all of our practices are under the watchful eye of a team of open-source, collaborative, and multidisciplinary researchers. From the observation and documentation of soil health, soil carbon levels, soil microbiology, to overall land health we will contribute to the overall understanding of regenerative agriculture and its potential.

Skidmore research students, Shay and Zoe (pictured 3rd and 4th from the right), use a rapid in-field soil carbon assessment tool called Quick Carbon. Within two weeks, they took samples from 360 points on our farm. Using a drill system they took soil samples from each point, at the depths of 0-15cm and 15-30cm. Then, they analyze each sample in the field using a pocket reflectometer and the Quick Carbon phone app. The purpose of this project is to take inventory of our soil carbon at Caney Fork Farms so that we have a baseline to compare to as our soils become more and more carbon-rich through our continued dedication to regenerative agriculture.

Healthy soil means healthy food, so you can eat Caney Fork products knowing that you are getting the most out of every bite!
