Beneficial Insect Habitats

Posted on March 15th, 2022 by Marie Williamson

Enjoy this picture of some sweet Alyssum + dill that has been growing in our minimally heated greenhouse all winter.

We’ve almost officially survived the winter! The clocks have been sprung forward, the cold snaps are (hopefully) fewer and farther between, and best of all the pollinators are returning to the garden. Just in the past two warmer weeks we’ve seen honey bees, a single bumblebee, sweat bees, and at least five different species of butterflies!

We make sure to encourage all of these species and more by creating habitats for them all across the farm. We plant attractive flowers at our bed ends in the fields/greenhouses/hoophouses, seed cover crop on fallow beds and in pathways, and allow those so-called “weeds” of clover and dandelion to thrive in our grassy areas. All of these practices ensure that Bluebird works with and supports the natural environment it’s in.
